Calling Up From Rec Procedure

GSC GUIDELINE- Calling Up Players from Recreational to Competitive

Competitive teams, by their nature, have a constant desire to strengthen their teams. As a result, there is a natural urge, especially in younger age groups, for Competitive coaches to look for potential talent amongst the Recreational teams.

While there are many good reasons to call from Rec, there are some potential issues that can be created. Compliance with these guidelines should help to make the transition smooth

MAIN CONSIDERATION: DO WHAT IS RIGHT FOR THE PLAYER, not your team or the Rec team or coaches or parents.

GUIDELINES

1 - INFORM Rec. AGC and THC's, as well as the CHC and Club Administrator BEFORE you show up at a park asking questions about players. (email addresses are available on the GLSL web site)

2 - SCAN all teams at a given level for possible talent by asking all Rec THC's and AGC for suitable candidates. Do not restrict your view to just one player as you may be denying a better player an opportunity.

3 - NOTIFY the Rec. THC before speaking to a player or parents.

4 - INVITE the player, through his/her parents to a practice - do not ask the player first.

5 - EVALUATE the invited player at a practice by having 2 qualified coaches evaluate independant of each other (maybe ask 3rd party coaches to help). Ensure the practice you plan covers most general aspects of soccer, including but not limited to; speed, endurance, agility, balance, coordination, dribbling, passing, receiving, kicking, heads up, general effectiveness, offense, defense, etc.

6 - DECIDE quickly (within 24hrs) whether you would like to call up this player temporarily or permanently. The EODSA now allows unlimited callups from within a club so you may want to call the player up each week instead of pulling them from their Rec team. Some things to consider along these lines include; where you are in the season - if it's real early maybe permanent is a good choice but if it's late in the season (before July 31st) temporary maybe better. Also consider how much this will hurt the Rec team by removing the player as well as player relationships, driving arrangements, etc.

Note: It is a good idea to have the player practice and play a couple of weeks (by using the callup process) first to ensure the player and parents are happy with their new situation. Make sure you advise the player and parents, if they decide to play up permanently, there is no going back to Rec. this year as their spot may be filled by a player on a waiting list.

7 - CLOSE the issue by communicating quickly with all parties involved (including club officials)

In summary, please follow these guidelines and keep everyone informed, as indicated, of your intentions along the way so nobody is left out and surprised and please be quick about it (do not string along players for weeks).

Most of all, decide what is in the best interest of the PLAYER.
