U9 "Select" Program - 2010

Mar 3, 2010 r1.0

Due to some unforseen circumstances, our U9 Select (competitive) program will be returning to our normal Select program (see description below).

Many people worked very hard to create the enhanced program for 2010 but it just wasn't to be for this year.

As a result, tryouts will happen as per normal, teams will be selected, and teams will play in the standard EODSA Competitve division.

If you have any questions regarding this program, please feel free to email the club.

This note is intended to provide a little background information into our U9 Select program for 2010 (also known as our Competitive program).

For many of you, this will be the first opportunity for your child to play competitive soccer. Here are a few details.

The schedule for a Select player is typically one league game per week + 2 practices per week until Jun 30.
typically, one of the practices is held during the week and the other on Sat morning.
After Jun 30, coaches have the liberty to cancel weekend practices due to vacation schedules and GSC does not promote practices on long weekends.

In addition to league games, teams often enter 1 or 2 tournaments which the kids absolutely love.

A special practice from team selection day until May 15 will be a Futsal session which will take the form of a 15 min drill and 45 mins of game play inside a gym with a special soccer ball designed to build player confidence with the ball (additional charge of about $25 per player for this).

The weekend practice from May 15 - Jun 30 is a 1hr session staged by professional soccer coaches who not only coach the players, but also coach the coaches to provide them with real hands on training (there is an additional charge for this of approx $60 per player) after which the players will play a 30-45 minute mini-game.

Coaches at U9 are required to obtain additional training by completing a one day level 1 coach training session (paid for by the club).
A group leader will be assigned to act as a liason for coaches at this age to ensure the players are receiving proper training that is focused on developing players and not just on winning.
Coaches are expected to provide equal playing time for each child selected at all games (subject to limitations).

While Competitive is not for everyone, it is a great way for children to get their first taste of a competitive environment as we focus on building player confidence and development.
